This roof in the Karen village is made of leaves. It was the only one of this sort which we ever saw. The upper part of the roof looks like rice straw, and the Karen do grow some rice on tiny hillside terraces. The more traditional palm thatch is not available at these elevations, and this may be the best local alternative.
